You Spin Me Right Round

posted on: Monday, February 28

I thought it would be fun to share a little what I'll call 'behind the scenes' to my picture taking. W helped me out with some pics this weekend and I had him play with the continuous mode on the camera {you know, the one where it snaps a bunch of pictures really fast}. The results yielded a fun stop-action sequence that gives YOU a little look into how I get my shots. I pretty much just spin around and do silly poses. But, its lots of fun and despite some funny looks from passerby's it pretty much gets the results I'm looking for and only takes a few minutes. Wala! That's all there is to it. Enjoy the little video montage below.

p.s. How much do I love this striped and cropped shirt from Pookie and Sebastian?? I'm loving the cropped looks that are here this spring and I can't wait to wear shorts this summer and not have my shirt be so long that it covers them! {jeans via Express, boots via Steve Madden, belt thrifted}

Some Awkward & Awesome For Your Thursday

posted on: Thursday, February 24

I thought I'd do a little bonus awkward & awesome Thursday post since my week seemed to have a little extra awkward in it. Enjoy and don't forget to share your awkward & awesome moments with me in the comments! Cheers!

- the very long conversation that I had with the man at the plant store about trying to keep my succulent plant from dying and the look on his face as he explained to me that they are very hard to kill. I'm a serial plant murderer.
- the look on the plant man's face when I casually referred to my plant by name (his name is henry — yes — I name my plants)
- thinking you see someone you know and waving really frantically and yelling their name loudly then realizing when they turn around that it isn't them and doesn't really resemble them at all
- wearing mis-matched knee socks over my jeggings and not realizing it until I'm out the door. maybe people will think its a new fashion trend or something. right.
- talking on the phone to a professional colleague and automatically saying 'love ya, bye' as I hung up because that's what I always say to friends and family — but definitely not to colleagues — AWKWARD!!
- my extreme over-reaction in the aisle at duane reade when I realized that mini cadbury eggs are back for Easter. I might have yelped a little.

- the above photo! via we heart it
- W mixing up the phrase 'it's the cat's meow' and instead saying 'it's the cat's pajamas', me relentlessly making fun of him then googling and finding out that it is a real phrase, which we will now be saying a lot
- mini cadbury eggs are here!!!
- NYC restaurant week starts this week and we've got reservations to our fav steak house
- its Thursday, which means tomorrow is Friday, which means its the weeeekend!
- the fact that wipeout makes me laugh uncontrollably every time I watch it.

Tiffany Blue Nailed to Perfection

Chanel goes blue — Tiffany blue, and I'm smitten with this nail polish hue. It reminds me a little of Essie's turquoise and caicos which I also love. I still have yet to find this shade for purchase but you can get more info on this summery polish here. A bottle goes for $27, yikes! Start saving your pennies ladies, or better yet find a nail salon that carries the shade and get yourself a mani!

Recipe Time: Italian Cookies

posted on: Tuesday, February 22

  • I'm sure you've seen the pink and green Italian butter cookies that frequent the racks of pastry shops and delicatessens. Well, they happen to be my ALL TIME favorite cookies and I finally found a recipe that tastes like the ones you buy at the store! I whipped up a batch of these over the holidays and they are SO good. With a slight almond taste and yummy chocolate I can seriously eat an entire plate of these in one sitting — no joke! Find my version of the recipe below. Enjoy!

    3/4 cup sweet butter
    3/4 cup granulated sugar
    1 large egg yolk
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1 teaspoon almond extract
    2 -2 1/4 cups sifted flour
    8 ounces semisweet chocolate (optional)

    Preheat oven to 350°F.
Cream softened butter. Mix in sugar thoroughly. Beat in egg yolk, and extracts until light and fluffy. Stir in flour by hand, 1 cup at a time, making a soft dough. Press cookies out following directions for your cookie press. Bake 8-10 minutes (depending on size) at 350°. Let cool completely on a rack.

Melt 8 squares of semisweet chocolate over hot (not boiling) water. When melted, remove from flame but leave it over the hot water. Dip each cookie in hot chocolate, resting it on a long tined fork. It can be half dipped or bottom dipped or however you choose. Let set upside down on rack or waxed paper.

Welcome to my office. Ok, this may not be your idea of an office but it frequently serves as mine. {NYC isn't privy to extra rooms, ya know.} But, my bed is SUPER comfy, and the light in the room is really pretty. I do a lot of work in bed which I know is bad because then you can't sleep, but I really love my bed. And yes, I still think its fun to jump on the bed. Its the first thing I do if I'm staying in a hotel!

    Awkward and Awesome Thursday!

    posted on: Thursday, February 17

This photo pretty much sums up awkward and awesome thursday. This was taken well over a year ago while I was art directing a photo shoot. Bowling had nothing to do with the shoot, but we had down time and there happened to be a bowling ally. When there's a photographer around and you're trying to waste time the result is kinda awkward and kinda awesome. Yea, I totally got a strike. The Daybook is the brilliant mind behind awkward and awesome thursdays. Check it out. No, seriously, do it! I may just make this a recurring theme because I've got lots more where this came from.

    — When you don't hold the elevator door because you're kinda in a rush, or not paying attention, or just don't feel like having to talk to that person, but they make it in the elevator anyways and then you feel like a big dummy and pretend that you really tried to press the open door button...but everyone knows you didn't.
    — When I'm using my neighbors doorbell/peephole as a mirror for putting on my lipgloss in the morning while waiting for the elevator and she opens the door to my face.
    — Getting caught in the subway doors. Every day during my commute I inevitably see someone get stuck in the doors. It is definitely not fun to the person getting stuck but its kinda funny to watch. There, I said it. Its funny.
    — Listening to music at work with my headphones on and being really into the song and bobbing my head and mouthing the words and then realizing that someone really important is standing behind me waiting for me to notice them so they can get what they came for and get on with their day already.

    — Coming home on Monday and finding a dozen roses and a really sweet card waiting for me. Luv you W!
    — The pants that I just scored for $25 and are currently en route to me.
    — The facelift my blog is going to get. Its in the works and is coming soon!
    — The fact that I'm going to see my BFF this weekend and haven't seen her in a long time. Can't wait!
    — Freshly made guacamole that I just ate way too much of.
    — When the alarm goes off and I beg W to stay in bed for five more minutes before he has to get up and he pretends to still get up but then jumps back in bed.
    — Using the face time feature with my family. Ok, this can be kind of awkward too if you happen to witness this. We're a weird bunch but we're also AWESOME!
    — This THEIT bag giveaway that I really really want to win!!!

A Ruffle Has To Be Smart

    posted on: Wednesday, February 16

I recently visited the Balenciaga exhibit at the Spanish Institute and thought it highly appropriate to post some pics during NYFW. It was great seeing Balenciaga's fashions up close and personal. The detail that went into his work is simply amazing and I loved learning about the inspirations behind his clothing. The exhibit is only open for a few more days so, if you're in NYC hurry on up and get your butt down there. Besides these fabulous dresses there were also some amazing hats, including a turban which is back in style incase you haven't noticed. {I didn't get a pic of the hats because they were close to the guard and I didn't want to get yelled at, but I'm sneaky with my iphone. Or maybe you were totally allowed to take pics and I was trying to be all stealth for no reason. HA} Oh, and the title of this post is a quote by Balenciaga — "A ruffle has to be smart"

Fashion Monday on a Tuesday = Tuesday Bluesday

    posted on: Tuesday, February 15

    {Dress via Topshop, pumps via Steve Madden}

I scooped up this dress after hemming and hawing over it in the dressing room {for like 20 minutes}. I thought it would be one of those purchases that I would hate once I got home and then have to lug all the way back to the store but, I've grown quite fond of this little getup. Its definitely not something that would normally hang in my closet but the contents of my wardrobe accepted it with open arms. Welcome little blue dress, you're kinda sexy.

    Valentines Whoopie {Pies, that is.}

    posted on: Monday, February 14

Happy Valentine's Day lovers! W and I celebrated over the weekend with dinner, wine, and hooka! If you've never been to a hooka bar I suggest you go. It is definitely a fun {and interesting} experience. We had a blast although I think it will take a few days for the fruity smoke scent to leave our jackets. I decided to make whoopie pies for Valentine's Day this year. Find the recipe below, just be sure to use lots of food coloring if you want yours to be nice and pink! I also want to mention that I recently participated in the handwritten notecard exchange put together by A Hasty Life, and was linked up with some wonderful ladies that you can find here, here and here. It really is fun getting things in the mail! I sent everyone a card along with homemade candies seen here. It was great to have new pen pals and to learn a little about these women that I've never met. A fun way to make new friends if I do say so myself. Have a loverly day everyone!

    2 ¼ c all purpose flour
    1 tsp baking soda
    ¼ tsp salt
    1 egg
    1/3 c vegetable oil
    1 c sugar
    1 tsp vanilla
    8-10 drops red food coloring
    ¾ c buttermilk

Heat oven to 350˚F. Lightly spray two large cookie sheets with non-stick spray.

In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, beat the egg, oil, and sugar with a hand mixer. Beat in the vanilla and red food coloring. Using a spatula, stir in (by hand) the flour mixture and buttermilk alternately, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.

Drop by spoonfuls (I used a mini ice-cream scoop), onto prepared cookie sheets. They will spread, so leave a lot of space between scoops. Bake until the tops spring back lightly, about 8-15 minutes, depending on their size. Remove to wire racks to cool. Spread marshmallow filling onto the bottom of one cookie, and top with another to make a sandwich.

    ½ c butter, softened
    1 c confectioner’s sugar
    1 c marshmallow fluff (about ½ of a 7.5 oz jar)
    ½ tsp vanilla

Beat ingredients in a bowl until light and fluffy.

What a crazy week this has been! It is fashion week here in NYC and there is quite a lot going on. For those in NY I hope you've been enjoying the shows and staying warm. I can't stress the word layers enough. Tonight I'll be attending Lovely's first party of the year and I'm so happy to share that they are announcing my new title at the party. I am now officially Lovely's beauty and style editor. {Eeeeee titles are so fun — and official!} I'll also be celebrating Valentine's Day with my guy this weekend because who wants to celebrate on a Monday, right? There's wine to be drunk! With that, I leave you with a picture that I snapped of my cat, Penny Lane. She'll be getting lots of love this weekend because she keeps my feet warm and man is it cold out! Link love below.

    DIY Woven Chain Bracelet

    posted on: Wednesday, February 9

When I first saw Aurélie Bidermann's Do Brazil bracelets and necklaces {found here and here} I immediately wanted one. When I saw the price tags however, all I could think was SERIOUSLY?!?! Then I came across this DIY via Honestly WTF and thought...hello!! Of course you can make this yourself! So, I broke out the good old bead box {which is still filled with loads of embroidery thread from my high school days} and got to work. I purchased the chain from M&J Trimming and made a $395 bracelet for a grand total of around $15!! Cha-ching. My results below. The color possibilities are endless!

    Honeysuckle Inspiration

    posted on: Tuesday, February 8

I know that I am late in acknowledging Pantone's color of the year, but to be honest I'm not really a huge 'pink' person {contrary to my blog's color scheme here}. However, with Valentine's Day just a week away and Spring right around the corner, there's no better time than now to pay a little tribute to Honeysuckle pink!

This week is finally over and I'm so excited. This weekend I'll be art directing and styling a makeup photoshoot for Lovely and I can't wait! I feel like I've been planning this forever and I'm thrilled to be working with some amazing talents. {All will be revealed on the blog soon.} And, yes yes I know, it is super bowl weekend. I'm sure I'll tune in for some of the game and, of course, the half time show despite my lack of interest in the teams playing. Really though, any excuse to eat wings and chips and dips, and you can count me in! Have a fun weekend everyone. Link love below.

Blazing Trails: The Working Girl' s Outfit

    posted on: Thursday, February 3

I love a great blazer and the automatic 'professional status' it throws off. However, what I love even more is the endless pairings that go with it. I'm lucky enough to work in an office where jeans are acceptable on days other than Fridays, and there's nothing better  than a chic blazer to dress up a casual outfit. In my opinion it has become a staple for the 'working girl's' outfit.

    Valentines Treats

    posted on: Wednesday, February 2

With Valentines Day on the horizon I decided to make a batch of nonpareils candies {aka button candies} to include with some packages that I'm getting ready to send out for a card exchange {more on that later}. They were quick and easy to make, and I opted for semi-sweet and white chocolate with fun colored sprinkles. I then packaged them up in some cute treat bags and, of course enjoyed sampling a bag myself! Find the recipe here. Hint: I spooned the melted chocolate into baggies and snipped the corner off {like icing a cake} and it made it very easy to achieve nice nickel sized circles.
